GUIDE
How much does CQC registration cost?
There is no upfront CQC application fee. The cost most people miss is the annual provider fee, plus everything you actually need to launch. Here is the honest 2026 breakdown.

CQC annual fees
There is no upfront application fee to register with the CQC. You do not pay the regulator to apply, which surprises most people. Instead, the CQC charges an annual provider fee once your registration takes effect, set by the size of your service rather than a single flat figure. For a community service such as home care or supported living, it is worked out from the number of people you support: a base amount plus a charge for each service user, at each location. As a guide, in 2026 that base is £239 plus around £54 per service user, though you should always confirm the current figure with the CQC. For a care or nursing home, it is banded by the number of people you are registered to accommodate. The fee is invoiced after registration and recurs every year. The real cost of getting an application wrong is not a fee, it is the months of lost time and preparing the whole submission again.
You will see flat figures quoted online, including £1,522, £1,867 or “around £2,000”. Treat them with caution. The CQC does not charge a single flat registration fee for social care; it charges an annual fee that varies with the size of your service, so any one-size-fits-all number is misleading. We give you the figure for your specific service on a free consultation, and you can confirm the live position on the CQC website. (Figures reviewed 06 September 2026.)
DBS, training, insurance and setup costs
The CQC’s annual fee is only the regulator’s charge. Several other costs are unavoidable when you register and launch a care business. Here is what to budget for, with realistic 2026 figures for a small domiciliary care startup.
| Cost item | 2026 figure | Note |
|---|---|---|
| CQC application fee | £0 | There is no upfront fee to apply to the CQC. |
| CQC annual provider fee (home care or supported living) | £239 + around £54 per service user | A base amount plus a charge for each service user, at each location. Invoiced after registration and recurring every year. Confirm the current figure with the CQC. |
| CQC annual provider fee (care or nursing home) | Banded | Set by the number of people you are registered to accommodate. |
| Registered manager application | £0 | The CQC charges no fee. Older guidance quoting around £148 is out of date. |
| Enhanced DBS checks (team of 5 to 10) | £250 to £530 | First round. Every member of staff in contact with people who use the service needs one. |
| DBS Update Service | Around £13 per person, per year | Makes checks portable. |
| Staff training (5 to 10 care workers) | £1,050 to £4,100 | Mandatory training before staff deliver care. Online versus in-person changes the figure. |
| Insurance | Varies | Public liability and employers’ liability, priced on service type and size. |
| Policies and procedures | Varies | A full set mapped to the CQC’s Quality Statements, written professionally or built in-house at the cost of your time. |
| Company formation and accountancy | Varies | Setting up the company and getting the financial structure right. |
| Professional support | Varies | A specialist to build the business and the application. |
| Typical all-in total | £6,350 to £16,650 | Small domiciliary care agency, all-in. |
Registered manager application fee: £0
A common misconception is that registering your registered manager costs money. It does not. The CQC charges no fee for a registered manager application. You will see older guidance and some competitor sites quoting a figure of around £148, that is out of date. The registered manager application itself is free; the cost attached to it is the time and preparation to get your manager through the fit-and-proper assessment and the interview.
Ongoing annual costs after registration
Registration is not the end of the spending. Once you are registered, the CQC charges an annual fee based on your service and size, and you will have ongoing costs for training, DBS renewals, insurance, and compliance. Budgeting only for the CQC fee is the most common costing mistake new providers make.
Getting the cost right, the first time
The biggest avoidable cost in CQC registration is a refused application: the months it takes to reapply, and the work of doing it all again. We build your entire care business and your application properly, so it is right the first time.
