CQC INTERVIEW PREPARATION

You have applied. The interview is coming.

The CQC fit person interview decides whether your registration goes through. Most people prepare for it alone, guessing what they will be asked. You do not have to.

Practise the real questions, run full mock interviews, and walk in knowing exactly what to expect.

The interview nobody prepares you for

You submitted your application. Now you are waiting for a call from CQC to arrange your fit person interview, and the guidance you can find is thin. A few PDFs. Some forum posts. Nothing that tells you what the conversation actually feels like or what a good answer sounds like.

The interview is not an exam, and it is not pass or fail. It is a professional conversation where an assessor checks that you understand your legal responsibilities and can run a safe, well-led service. But knowing that does not stop the nerves, and going in cold is how confident people freeze.

Preparation is the whole difference. The people who walk in ready are not smarter. They have simply practised.

What CQC actually asks about

The assessor works through your application and checks your understanding across a few clear areas. None of it is a trick. All of it is preparable.

Your role and responsibilities.

What a registered manager is legally accountable for, and how you run the day to day.

The fundamental standards.

Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, Well-Led, and how you meet them in practice.

Safeguarding and notifications.

How you protect people, and what you must report to CQC and when.

Your systems.

How you monitor quality, manage risk, and learn from things that go wrong.

You have covered most of this already, in your application and your experience. Preparation is about saying it clearly, out loud, under a little pressure.

How you get ready

1

Learn what they ask.

Work through the 400 questions and model answers so nothing in the interview is new to you.

2

Practise out loud.

Use mock interview mode and your live sessions to say your answers, not just read them. This is what builds calm.

3

Fix your weak spots.

Spaced repetition keeps bringing back what you find hard, until you can answer it without thinking.

Do this and the interview stops being an unknown. You will have already had the conversation, several times, before it counts.

Common questions about the CQC interview

Is the CQC fit person interview a test I can fail?

No. CQC is clear that it is not a pass or fail test and there is no score. It is an assessment of whether you understand your responsibilities and can manage a safe service. Matters can be revisited outside the interview. That said, going in prepared makes a real difference to how you come across.

How long does the CQC interview last?

CQC often asks you to allow two to three hours, but in practice most interviews last around one hour, and some are shorter. It depends on your application and how the conversation goes.

What will they ask me?

Questions about your role and legal responsibilities, the fundamental standards (Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, Well-Led), safeguarding, the notifications you must send CQC, and how you monitor quality and risk. Our preparation covers all of these with real questions and model answers.

Is the interview by phone, video, or in person?

It varies. CQC conducts fit person interviews by phone, by video call, or in person, sometimes at your premises or a CQC office. You will be told in advance which it is and given time to prepare.

What should I take to the interview?

It helps to have your CQC application form to hand, along with your statement of purpose and a copy of the current fundamental standards. You will also be asked to confirm your identity.

I have already applied. Is it too late to prepare?

No. The interview happens after you apply, so this is exactly the right time. CQC will confirm your interview date in advance, which gives you a window to practise. The sooner you start, the more ready you will be.
