How much does CQC registration cost?

What the CQC actually charges
There is no upfront application fee to register with the CQC. You do not pay the regulator to apply, which surprises most people. Instead, the CQC charges an annual provider fee once your registration takes effect, set by the size of your service rather than a single flat figure. For a community service such as home care or supported living, it is worked out from the number of people you support: a base amount plus a charge for each service user, at each location. As a guide, in 2026 that base is £239 plus around £54 per service user, though you should always confirm the current figure with the CQC. For a care or nursing home, it is banded by the number of people you are registered to accommodate. The fee is invoiced after registration and recurs every year. The real cost of getting an application wrong is not a fee, it is the months of lost time and preparing the whole submission again.
You will see flat figures quoted online, including £1,522, £1,867 or “around £2,000”. Treat them with caution. The CQC does not charge a single flat registration fee for social care; it charges an annual fee that varies with the size of your service, so any one-size-fits-all number is misleading. A common misconception is that registering your registered manager costs money. It does not. The CQC charges no fee for a registered manager application. You will see older guidance and some competitor sites quoting a figure of around £148, that is out of date. The registered manager application itself is free; the cost attached to it is the time and preparation to get your manager through the fit-and-proper assessment and the interview.
The costs that continue after you register
Registration is not the end of the spending. Once you are registered, the CQC charges an annual fee based on your service and size, and you will have ongoing costs for training, DBS renewals, insurance, and compliance. Budgeting only for the CQC fee is the most common costing mistake new providers make.
